Q: Why did UW create Purple?
A: Many UW faculty, staff, and researchers were already using public AI tools like ChatGPT for everyday work. Purple gives the UW community access to the same capabilities in a secure, UW-managed environment where your data stays protected. It also ensures everyone has access to a robust AI tool at no additional cost.
Q: What data can I enter into Purple?
A: Purple is intended for general university work such as drafting documents, summarizing information, and brainstorming. It is not approved for HIPAA-regulated data, confidential research data, or other sensitive or regulated data. You are responsible for handling FERPA-protected data in compliance with your role.
Q: Are there usage limits?
A: Yes, but most users are unlikely to reach them under normal use. A usage percentage displays in the upper right corner of the app, and you’ll be notified if you reach 100%. If you hit your limit, access will be paused until the reset date shown in the notification.
Q: Is there training available?
A: Yes. Live Zoom trainings and weekly office hours are available, offered by UWIT. Review the AI Calendar for upcoming sessions.
