Q: What’s the difference between a personal and business OneDrive?

A: OneDrive for Business is designed to comply with various regulatons (such as HIPAA and FERPA) and offers more storage compared to a personal OneDrive account.

In contrast, a personal OneDrive account (non-UW) does not meet these compliance standards and provides limited storage.

Q: Who is allowed access to OneDrive Business?

A: All UW SoN staff, and faculty are allowed access to OneDrive Business. External Sharing is not permitted in an attempt to maintain the privacy and security of sensitive data in accordance with HIPPA guidelines. If you’re a SoN staff member with a non-UW email or are having trouble getting into OneDrive in general, please feel free to contact the SoN IT Service Desk for assistance.

Q: Can files be shared with non-UW email addresses?

A: No, external sharing is disabled due to risks and challeneges associated with monitoring the potential sharing of sensitive information outside of UW. If you’d like to utilize a similar platform and share with external users, you can request a Microsoft Team or SharePoint Online site collection with external sharing enabled. Click here to request a Microsoft Team or SharePoint Online site.

Q: What is the difference between a local vs cloud file?

A: A local file is stored on your device, accessible without internet but limited to that device. A cloud file, like those in OneDrive, is stored online, accessible from any device with internet, and automatically backed up for better data protection. Please ensure your local files are uploaded to OneDrive to ensure you can access it outside of your laptop.
