Q: What is the cost of checking out a device?
A: Borrowing from the Central Pool doesn’t cost anything, as the School of Nursing Office of the Dean funds it.
Q: How often can I request a new computer?
A: The availability of a replacement computer depends on the specific circumstances. The SoN IT Service desk can generally restore malfunctioning devices with similar or identical computers. However, if the supplied device is insufficient to meet your needs, an order for a new computer may be issued pending approval. This may be necessary if the renewal falls outside the normal refresh cycle.
New computer orders may be approved based on your device’s current age and condition. Please submit a request to the SoN IT Servive Desk, and a technical professional will assess your equipment and recommend a replacement.
Q: Can I give my old computer to someone else in my department?
A: Under certain circumstances, transferring a university-owned computer to another department member may be possible, provided that appropriate data security measures are followed. Before the new user can use the device, it must undergo a re-imaging process, which involves securely erasing all data and restoring the device to its original configuration. Please get in touch with the SoN IT Service Desk to start this process.
Q: Can I keep my old computer?
A: It is not generally allowed to keep old university-issued computers, as they are considered the property of the University of Washington and the state of Washington. Unless expressly stated otherwise, these devices are expected to be returned to the university upon request or the end of the individual’s association with the university.
Q: I am a student, I need a computer. Can I use the central pool service?
A: Yes, you can use our loaner pool service. For more information, please visit the Loaner Pool page or fill out the loaner request form.
Q: If my device has been swapped, can I continue using the newly issued device?
A: If an SoN IT tech swapped a device with you, then feel free to keep using the new device, your old device will be recycled. Please keep in mind that all devices that are borrowed by staff/faculty are to be returned promptly.
